Double Vision: Why Do Spacecraft Have Twin Parts?

Seeing double? You’re looking at our Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope’s Solar Array Sun Shield laying flat in pieces in the foreground, and its test version connected and standing upright in the back. The Sun shield will do exactly what it sounds like –– shade the observatory –– and also collect sunlight for energy to power Roman.

These solar panels are twins, just like several of Roman’s other major components. Only one set will actually fly in space as part of the Roman spacecraft…so why do we need two?

Sometimes engineers do major tests to simulate launch and space conditions on a spare. That way, they don’t risk damaging the one that will go on the observatory. It also saves time because the team can do all the testing on the spare while building up the flight version. In the Sun shield’s case, that means fitting the flight version with solar cells and eventually getting the panels integrated onto the spacecraft.

Our Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope's primary structure (also called the spacecraft bus) moves into the big clean room at our Goddard Space Flight Center (top). While engineers integrate other components onto the spacecraft bus in the clean room, the engineering test unit (also called the structural verification unit) undergoes testing in the centrifuge at Goddard. The centrifuge spins space hardware to ensure it will hold up against the forces of launch.

Engineers at our Goddard Space Flight Center recently tested the Solar Array Sun Shield qualification assembly in a thermal vacuum chamber, which simulates the hot and cold temperatures and low-pressure environment that the panels will experience in space. And since the panels will be stowed for launch, the team practiced deploying them in space-like conditions. They passed all the tests with flying colors!

The qualification panels will soon pass the testing baton to the flight version. After the flight Solar Array Sun Shield is installed on the Roman spacecraft, the whole spacecraft will go through lots of testing to ensure it will hold up during launch and perform as expected in space.

The Infinights

The pixelated RPG game Infinights, developed by Tales From the Stinky Dragon, garnered many positive reviews from fans of the developer’s past works and soon brought in new fans, many of whom had never played a game of such style. 

Infinights is a story-driven game where you play as four ‘Infinight Interns’ trying to find the Infinights (a group of notorious heroes), defeat a devious woman called Paralyte, and save the realm of Faeza. There are many loveable NPCs scattered throughout the five realms of Faeza, each unique to their homeland. And the music changes throughout the land, even during encounters! 

What many have found interesting about the game is that the player does not control a specific character. The four Interns move as a group and the walking order of the players changes according to their environment (for example, Mudd leads the group through his home city of the BuhBayou while Kyborg will lead when they’re in Evirwinter). In combat, each Intern and their enemies are given a specific order to which they can take a turn. This is one of the many cases where Infinights uses luck and randomization to achieve unique playthroughs. Often, conversations will have dialogue options that will either succeed or fail based on the program’s virtual ‘coin flip’ and the amount of damage any attack will do it based on a ‘dice roll’ of sorts. 

Infinights has been praised for its simple but beautiful graphics and its simple design. However, it has gained criticism as well. 

One main flaw many players see is how rigid the story is. There are not many chances for exploration and though conversations can change due to luck, things end up the same in the end. After some time, the developers released an update containing a second playing mode. This mode, entitled ‘The Past’ (changing the main story mode to ‘The Present’), lets the player play in a more open-world concept. And as the original Infinights. 

What’s loved about The Past is that it allows the player to see more into the life of the characters the game is entitled after. There were complaints that, for being titular characters and the game’s main quest, the Infinights did not have a strong role in the story, especially Grislee and Elleve. The Past changes this, giving each Infinight more lines and a more fleshed out character. 

Of course, the open-world style is appreciated as well. There’s a fully interactable map to navigate through and many new locations within each city to explore. New shops, new NPCs, new quests. And while The Past has a few scripted adventures and quests, the easiest way to explore the world is to travel to one city and simply walk around. More quests become available as the Infinights become more renowned throughout Faeza, with more people also willing to aid their adventures. 

The Past also created thought. As the main villain of the main story, Paralyte, is seen in this mode as just another Infinight. She is primarily called ‘Luce’, which is her real name, and is visually different. Many have joked that she looks ‘healthier’ in The Past as her skin is less pale. What many notice is that there’s no green infinity sign carved into her armor in The Past, but she instead wears an armband with the Infinight’s logo on it. (Just like Spectril!) 

Throughout the story, Luce and the others get along very well. Her voice is still ‘honeyed yet haunting’, but her interactions with the Infinights are full of smiles and jokes. Luce cracks a few herself, leaving the threats to the enemies encountered in combat. 

This mode, even when played to 100%, does not address exactly why Luce left the Infinights. Theories have been made through dialogue left throughout both modes of the game, but there has been no official response from the developers. Tales From the Stinky Dragon often prides itself on adding a bit of mystery to their games, with some questions getting answered while others are left up to the fans. 

The newest mystery they’ve unveiled is Grotethe, another RPG game in the works. Through released screenshots, it’s clear that the game uses the same base as Infinights. The combat and dialogue systems are the same, along with the game’s basic premise. However, one question that has been raised is how the story modes work. Will Grotethe have only a story-driven mode, only open-world, or will it include both? None of the released content points to any of these options. 

On a similar note, it is also clear that Grotethe takes is set in an entirely different place. The technology and locations (and even the appearance of one of the main characters!) that can be seen in different screenshots are causing speculation amongst fans. People wonder whether the two games are related or not and, if they are, how? No voice clips for any of the characters have been released yet, but fans hope that the voices of the main characters will aid them in this quest for answers. 

Until then, everyone continues to enjoy the stunning game that is Infinights. 

This project, with all visual details compiled on one Adobe Illustrator document entitled 'rot' because I failed to spell 'rpg' started on Tuesday, January 14th. Through various sessions of various lengths and occasional mouse usage, it has finally been completed. I now hate rectangles and squares. 

Various parts of the artwork should be recognizable to other games of a similar style. When I went looking for sprite bases when this project first started, I landed on a base sprite for Omori. I have never played Omori. Along with that, the way the combat screen looks is taken from Deltarune (which I have played) and the shop screen has influences from it. 

And it should be known that most things made in this work I had a trace (with pixels) from a random internet image. That dragon was NOT freehand, nor was that train, the map and pretty much everything from the shop screen (though, the shopkeeper whose name I cannot remember was drawn from a sketch I made). All text except title text (Infinights, Grotethe, Tales From the Stinky Dragon) is actual type, only the title text I drew (with a reference).

My school shouldn’t have allowed me to have an Adobe account or a teacher/class to teach me graphic design. I am using it for evil.

Gosh… the way I see Love & Deepspace right now completely changed my motivation… everything! 😭 I wish I didn’t thought through this, but what if this game was a bit of a horror genre, and the love interests are self-aware?

Hear me out…

NOTE: If you don’t want to lose your motivation on playing Love & Deepspace, please DO NOT read this. It’s not worth it! I promise! I’m warning you! 👀

But if you’re brave enough to go sober, then hold on to this realization I have been through.

What to expect in this reading are the lines where the love interests are self-aware and needing the player’s presence.

Recently, I played Hidden Waves featuring Caleb when he got a fever. It was when Caleb waited MC to come back home after spending time with her friends, but he waited for so long and got soaked by the rain. Little did she knew, he was watching her and doesn’t want to interfere spending time with her friends. He wanted to go back home with MC because Skyhaven was not safe that time.

On the next day, Caleb got sick and wanted to keep himself closed from MC. He doesn’t want to bother or annoy, but it was making MC feel more concerned and it indirectly hurts her.

Thankfully, once Caleb let his guard down, he let her into his room and take care of him. They make up and resolved their problems.

It was enjoyable since you’ll open your microphone to sing for him. But—

What was interesting was his lines to MC, saying:

“I want you to stay here… stay here with me…”

“Please, spend a next hundred years with me…”

“Linkon or Skyhaven, it doesn’t matter. It could be anywhere so long as you’re by my side.”

“Don’t you always say I’m in great shape? It’ll be around for however many years I’m alive and kickin’”

I don’t know why, but these lines have like hidden messages. “HIDDEN waves…” idk maybe I’m just going crazy but…

No one can live that longer except robots. Unless they got rusted or no one is there to take care of them/manage them. How come MC would promise that to Caleb for a hundred years. UNLESS…

He’s not talking to MC in the game… it’s the player.

He’s talking to us! 👀 Because he’s a virtual game character that could live longer and we’re… human…

Anyway.

Visual novels/dating sims became popular because they have thrilling/dark themes with it. Before Love & Deepspace was made, you would mostly see other visual novel games mixed with horror genre.

So yeah, these games would be a bit graphic.

But what became popular & unique was the love interests’ obsession to players. They are yandere. BUT—they are SELF-AWARE while interacting with the player, NOT the MC in the story.

Get ready, because what I’m about to share you might be what Love & Deepspace is all about, if it will happen.

If you’re familiar with playing/watching John Doe, then you know this will be a bit graphic, but depressing. Obviously in visual novels there are many endings. Some endings are wholesome, some are horrible, but there is this one ending, the abandoned ending where John Doe was crying out to the player not to leave him from the game’s time loop.

He was begging for the player not to leave because he will be stuck in the game forever.

The interpretation in this ending was that John Doe was begging for the player’s presence, needing to interact, wanted to be loved, flirting with the player.

He wants attention because the game must’ve been abandoned/forgotten for a long time and not popular in today’s society. That’s why in the beginning of the game, it gives off dreamcore/weirdcore environments because of the nostalgic past of the game’s features.

Until the player kept playing, the game was in good quality and John Doe was more handsome and approachable, even though his mental state was not stable.

Why?

Because he was forgotten for so long that no one is playing his game to interact with him. He even forgot his name, that’s why he would call himself John Doe. John Doe is a name for patients who cannot remember their real names. His mental state was not stable because he was alone and stuck in a time loop. No other player was there to remember him, even him, he cannot remember himself, slowly deteriorating. JUST LIKE IN LOVE & DEEPSPACE! 👀

What if… what if our love interests would become wanderers of being abandoned? Unless we relieve them by interacting with them and romancing them will they get back into their real self???

Thinking about this if the boys are stuck, waiting for just one player to play Love & Deepspace, it will be so devastating! What if the real plot was not MC in the story, but us players? The game will never be alive without our interaction with these boys. What if we’re the source of life in the game, and they want our attention and interaction to keep the game alive and going? Because if we leave, if we don’t play the game, their world will collapse. The story in the game is stuck in a time loop for us to interact and make decisions. Just like what John Doe was struggling!

What if, the love interests will go crazy looking for a player to romance with, but finally forget them, that the boys even forget themselves?

I’m crying. I’ve literally cried imagining this with them. 😭

I’m so sorry for these boys. I mean, watching the video if you leave for like 30 days or more, they will all lose interest. Rafayel cleaned up his studio because the player is not around, describing his colorless life. Mephisto threw away a plant MC left for both him and Sylus, wondering why MC was not around. Zayne was worried and concerned about MC’s health and safety. Xavier kept waiting and waiting, he thought he was in an endless dream where MC is not around.

Nintendo DS edition!

Videogames have always been one of my favorite regression activities. And I've always gravitated towards old and accessible videogames, since it's pretty easy to find emulators and ROMs for old consoles, I compiled a list of my favorite DS games to play when regressed!

🐾: Nintendogs: Best Friends (2005)

Nintendogs a classic virtual pet game, I could even say it's the virtual pet game for the DS. Here you adopt puppies and get to raise, train and play with them. One of my favorite mechanics is calling my puppy by its name and having it understand it and come to me!

Aside from being absolutely adorable theres so much to do with your puppies! From basic care like walking, brushing or bathing them to training them and participating in competitons, which can be a little difficult but add a lot of flavor to the game! Plus the dog competition elements are really cool as someone who likes dog competitions!!

👠: Style Savvy (2009)

Not gonna lie, I made this whole post to talk about this game. I love style savvy!!! We desperately need to end the conception that dress up games are only for little girls!

In Style Savvy, you run your own fashion boutique and help clients pick their outfits, in which all clients have their own styles. The game requires you to pay attention to your client's preferences and store a variety of outfits in your boutique.

Speaking! Of! Outfits!!! Style Savvy includes so many fashion subcultures from the 00's, like gyaru, gothic lolita, sweet lolita, decora, it's so fun and I never get bored of checking on my boutique daily.

🫧: Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Time/Darkness (2008)

Mystery Dungeon is one of my favorite Pokemon spin-offs! It's a super fun roguelike RPG where you play as a pokemon and their team going through dungeons and fighting other pokemon, it's a perfect blend between mainline pokemon gameplay and unique mechanics, plus you get to play as a pokemon!!

And this game has such a charming story!! I'm always on my feet when I play this game, and just a warning, it can get a little emotional sometimes.

💚: MySims (2007)

MySims is a life simulator town creator from the likes of Stardew Valley or Animal Crossing, and even though it's simpler than the aforementioned, it still lives in my heart rent free!

Here you do several tasks and minigames to raise the town level and with every level the town gets bigger, more tourists come visit it and more people move in. From all the minigames, the conversation one is my favorite, since it's so simple yet fun!

And the characters, oh, the characters! Although most of the iconic characters come from later instalments, this game doesn't lack memorable characters, specially the shopkeepers! My favorite is Olivia :3

🖌️: Kirby Canvas Curse (2005)

This game is usually overlooked for being very different from the usual Kirby games but it's so cool nonetheless!

It's not a traditional platformer where you control Kirby's movements, but instead you interact with the environment (tapping Kirby, enemies and objects) and draw lines that work as platforms, so, instead of playing as Kirby you play with the environment to help Kirby get through the levels.

This game was made specifically for the stylus, and although it can be played with a mouse just fine it works very well with a drawing tablet!

🍳: Cooking Mama (2006)

I love cooking and I love motherly figures, so Cooking Mama is right up my alley! This game makes me feel like a clumsy kid (who is trying their best) cooking with their mom.

Here you cook a variety of recipes and every step of the recipe is it's own self contained microgame. Plus, the controls translate well from stylus to mouse for the emulator, and if you have a drawing tablet it simulates the DS experience perfectly!

And although this is the first Cooking Mama game, it's timeless and a good introduction to the series.

🎮: Honorable Mentions!

Cookie Shop DS: I may be a sucker for resource management games but cookie shop is soooo fun and adorable! You get to befriend cute critters while running a dessert shop!

Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver: This one is a classic, and good for beginners due to the fewer pokemon and mechanics while still being a little challenging.

Kirby Squeak Squad: Although I recommend Canvas Curse more, Squeak Squad is more of a traditional Kirby game, and unlike Super Star Ultra, it's not awfully difficult nor cosmic horror themed.

Animal Crossing Wild World: Another classic, and even if later games from this franchise are more popular and have more features, sometimes less is more.

Carmy Berzatto and his erotic transfer

All the things he says and some he doesn’t even dare to voice out, about the C person, are actually about Sydney.

The sublimation, emotional avoidance, denial, and projection are topics most of the fandom has already picked up on since S2 and all of us have talked about them often, obviously so did I:

Now, if we dig deeper, Carmy is what therapists usually call: a TRANSFER CLIENT.

Transference is a psychological mechanism that allows the person to direct feelings or desires related to an important figure in their life—such as a parent or a significant other—toward someone who is not that person. 

*More about transference here.

It typically happens in the therapeutical context between therapist-client but it's not necessarily limited to that context as it can be very common in other scenarios, such as professional, educational, etc. Especially among those who tend to project. Like Carmy.

Let's recap, shall we?

“I know we’re not supposed to hang out until later” (after talking to Syd about silverware).

My favest: The kiss (after Syd said: "Goodnight!")

“I have to call my GF” (right after hugging Syd for having passed the fire suppression test).

“She’s so great that scares the shit outta me” (while under the table with Syd).

“She’s peace” (I won’t even mention the panic attack at this point, which is what makes this literally illogical unless we frame it within a transfer context, which is exactly what Carmy's case would dictate to be done by a therapist IF HE WERE UNDER TREATMENT.) This would be sooooo easy if he just made an appointment with a therapist and a psychiatrist and saw them weekly. So easy! FML!

“Sorry” (after the Polka dot sauce to a person he never dared to call because the real person he wanted to say that to was the one he had JUST TALKED TO AND TURNED AROUND AND LEFT).

The common factor is always Sydney.

This is not just a projection, it’s full-on transfer, erotic transfer even, to be more specific. It is even more common in people with a history of abuse.

Erotic transfer

As I mentioned above, this is quite common in a psychotherapeutic context. Interactions between therapist and patient are influenced by the feelings and impressions that develop during the therapeutic relationship. The terms transference and countertransference are used to describe this process. We have virtually a million papers on this particular topic, and all therapists know exactly how to deal with these cases and even use the countertransfer as a therapeutic tool. There are even lines of treatment based on transference and countertransference that have proven to help patients who experience this type of unconscious feelings toward their therapists.

There's a whole section in the code of conduct that determines the guidelines and limitations to deal with this and any other type of transference (there are multiple types) in a therapeutic environment, and all professionals have to comply with them at all times.

BUT

-This is gonna be a loooong question, fasten your seatbelts-

What happens when this is the case of a chef who is experiencing a sexualized transference in which he is unconsciously transferring his sexual fantasies about his business partner, containing elements that are primarily reverential, romantic, intimate, sensual, or sexual not toward his therapist but towards an Emergency Dr. who was his frustrated high school crush, whom obviously he has idealized because back then he couldn't even talk to her and just sketched her away in his notebook

And who has idealized him right back as well, because the crush was mutual.

Not to mention someone who is not avoidant, she's maybe even too forward:

Someone who goes after what she wants and just doesn't give a rat's ass about saying things like:

"Never apologize"

"No one is keeping score of dropped shoes"

"I love you"

Then what?

Well:

He ended up not choosing Claire this time around either, sure! But the transference remains as his undealt feelings of guilt and emotional avoidance are still part of the equation, and until those are fully elaborated consciously and he makes a conscious decision as to how to move forward, he will continue being stuck in this situation and transferring, projecting and sublimating his true desires onto a more attenable and convenient canvas:

How do erotic transferences end?

The only way is to put it on the table (absolutely no pun intended even though I am convinced this is gonna happen → THE ULTIMATE SYDCARMY TABLE SCENE).

On a more serious note, the only correct way to put an end to any type of transference in a therapeutic environment, in case that's the chosen course of action, is to put all the cards on the table and elaborate on the motivations, till the REAL MOTIVATIONS come up, as they never do at first.

The client has to realize ON THEIR OWN that their transferred feelings are nothing but representations of their inner feelings and are not occurring as a result of their relationship with the therapist but rather as an unconscious mechanism that enables them NOT TO DEAL with a subjacent CONFLICT that is being AVOIDED, once that conclusion is reached, the next step is to work on the reasons why that conflict is being avoided and what does the patient want to do about it. Do they wish to continue avoiding it? Why? What would be the implications of that status quo? Are they willing to deal with them? Is it wise? Is it just simpler? What if the opposite choice is made? Why would that be the case? What would be the implications of that? What can be gained and lost in the process or in the aftermath of it? In any case: What is required to go through with any of these potential courses of action? Does the patient currently have what is required? If that's not the case: Why not? Could they get it? How? Why wasn't that done before? Why now? Etc... The therapist has to become less of a “blank screen” and more interactive with the patient. There has to be a back-and-forth. It's a whole process.

That process is incredibly difficult in Carmy's case because the C person is not his therapist, doesn't have to or wants to follow a code of conduct, wouldn't know how to go about this whole process even if she did, and most importantly: Is in love with him.

Are we screwed?

No.

How come?

Because thank dog there's a Chaos menu on the table.

Can we just focus on the CHAOS MENU, PLEASE!?!?!

The chaos that constantly haunts Carmy is → THE MENU. Not the "peace".

And the menu is his link to Sydney and all she represents for him.

I have been saying this since before S3, and S3 has only confirmed my assumptions → Their menu is their red string.

They will have to at some point have a real conversation about the menu, not just a quick exchange of feedback about the daily rotation in between services.

The chaos will fall into place at some point so they can keep the restaurant open, win a star, etc.

Also, the conversation/closure with the C person will have to happen at some point too, next season.

So the cards will have to be put on the table, sooner or later.

Later is what the song foreshadowed and in Save it for later I trust (prefer Vedder's version).

Bonus track: THE SYDLUCA TRAP. Syd is following the same path. Mirroring Carmy. She's in the process to start sexually transferring her undealt-with sexual desires for Carmy to Luca.

Whilst I fully support this as a temporary fix and a plot device that can give us a few pretty interesting eps where Carmy becomes a jelly bomb and therefore is forced to stop denying what he truly feels for Syd, as I explained here, I can't support this behavior in the long run because as any transfer, it is UNHEALTHY for all parties involved. Sydluca is a plot device that needs to be handled with care because it can very well end up becoming a comfort zone that is nothing but a trap that will only serve one purpose: "compensation". That which cannot be experienced with whom she truly wants to experience it will be experienced with a substitute figure, and eventually, no matter how well this replacement goes, the constant ghost of: "What if" will haunt her because she has already gotten to this point with Carmy:

So now it's too late to compensate healthily and just move on. It would bring nothing but heartache in the long run. If Luca had come along sooner into Syd's life, the story would be very different. Same with C. But TIMING MATTERS. If I know this, I'm pretty sure Storer and Calo know it too, so I choose not to be worried about it.
